Journey's Wish to be a Cheerleader!

Journey's wish to be a cheerleader!

“ This wish experience literally changed my daughter. ”

- Journey's mom

When Make-A-Wish® Georgia met with Journey to discuss what she wanted to wish for, Journey announced that she wanted to become a cheerleader! Make-A-Wish worked with The Stingray Allstars, a Marietta-based competitive cheerleading gym, to help make Journey’s wish come true.

Eight-year-old Journey is an introverted girl who loves to write stories, make up songs and listen to Justin Beiber. Journey is currently in remission from kidney cancer.  Although she’s still in recovery, that does not stop her from cheering for her favorite sports team, the Miami Heat, or from learning new cheer moves from the “Cheerios” cheer squad on the television show, ‘Glee.’ When Make-A-Wish® Georgia met with Journey to discuss what she wanted to wish for, Journey announced that she wanted to become a cheerleader!  Make-A-Wish worked with The Stingray Allstars, a Marietta-based competitive cheerleading gym, to help make Journey’s wish come true. Journey taught herself everything she knows about cheerleading and gymnastics in her living room,  but on her wish day, she was ready for her first real practice!  That evening, Journey was greeted by hundreds of cheerleaders for her big day. She impressed the coaches and other cheerleaders with how much she was able to do without having had any coaching! She received lots of cheerleading items, including an official UCA cheer jacket, which is like the Lombardi trophy of cheerleading! After her wish party and first practice, she began taking weekly cheer and tumbling classes, which were incorporated in her wish package. Now that her skill level has increased, she has moved up one level and is working on her back-handspring.  In the two months since her wish experience, Journey’s mother has watched her blossom and become more sociable and outgoing, both in practice and in school. Her academic performance has improved dramatically and her mother credits it completely to the wish experience and the camaraderie and support that her family has received from the gym. On November 8th Journey earned a place on the Half-year Competitive Squad and has two competitions in metro Atlanta this year. We look forward to hearing more about Journey’s successes and are honored to have been a part of making her wish come true!
