It’s amazing how moments in movies can incite dreams that children wish to become reality. However, it’s even more amazing when those wishes finally come true.
Sydney is a five-year-old girl from Augusta, Ga., with a true artistic spirit who loves to draw, color, dance and swim. Sydney knew exactly where she wanted to venture to after she watched the popular Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch.
She wanted to swim with the dolphins and meet the mermaids that reside within the boundaries of the beautiful islands of Hawaii. With that said, Sydney was not hesitant to strive to make this wish come true when granted the opportunity from Make-A-Wish Georgia.
A Magical Journey
Sydney was diagnosed with a stage-three Wilm's tumor in October 2015, a rare form of kidney cancer that primarily affects children. After having surgery in December 2015, she finished chemotherapy and was finally prepared to embark on her magical journey.
Sydney and her family enjoyed a time of rest and relaxation in Hawaii, coupled with the outings she has always wished for. Sydney swam with the dolphins and mermaids, which was her favorite part of the entire trip. “This opportunity came at the right time, it was an amazing experience," said Sydney’s mom, Katrina.
"She wanted to stay in Hawaii.”
The Power of a Wish
The community truly came together to make this wish come true as wish coordinators and volunteers from both Make-A-Wish Georgia, and Make-A-Wish Hawaii worked together to make this the best wish experience possible for Sydney.
Sydney has now started kindergarten this fall. She had such a great experience with Make-A-Wish Georgia that she wants to start a lemonade stand in order to donate the proceeds back to those in need in the community as they have done for her.
