Two years ago, TJ’s father passed away from complications dues to sickle cell. He was only 46 years old. TJ’s grandfather also lost his battle with sickle cell years before TJ was even born.
This past year has been a long journey for our family. My son missed almost the entire second half of his ninth grade year due to complications with his illness.
Last year, his doctors at Hugh Spalding hospital referred TJ for a wish. That request was approved and my son was told that his wish would be coming true.
It has truly been an honor and a blessing to work with the Make-A-Wish staff and volunteers through this entire process. Our wish granting team was so energized and full of love. This passion allowed me and my family to come alive with joy and happiness.
TJ’s wish was to go on a Disney Cruise. Make-A-Wish Georgia allowed our entire family to go — including TJ’s sister, his grandmother and myself. We were gone for five wonderful days and visited the Bahamas and Castaway Cay. Our room had an ocean view and a balcony to relax on.
The end to this story is even better. With a renewed sense of hope, TJ was able to pass the 10th grade, despite missing so much time the previous school year. His health continues to improve thanks to the prayers from the community, encouragement from the hospital staff and the wish come true from Make-A-Wish Georgia.
This wish experience has allowed my son to be better equipped to battle an illness that has been so devastating to our family. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for that.
