Maylin was just 3 years old when she started complaining about her legs and knees hurting. Believing that wasn’t normal for a child Maylin’s age, her parents took her to the doctor only to be diagnosed with “growing pains.” The pain eventually became constant, so Maylin returned to the doctor where she was diagnosed with leukemia.
Shocked and scared, Maylin and her parents rushed to Memorial Hospital in Savannah to begin the fight of their life. Maylin’s chemo treatments started immediately, and she stayed in the hospital for two weeks before she got her port and was able to return home.
FROM ISOLATED TO INSPIRATIONAL
Throughout her 2 and a half years of treatment, Maylin often felt isolated. She counted on her friends, Dora, Boots, Minions and all the Disney princesses to encourage her to get through the tough times. She couldn’t wait to meet them someday! Little did she know, that day would come when she got to make her most heartfelt wish.
Maylin’s wish to go to Walt Disney World was life-giving. She didn’t have to worry about doctors or getting poked, she just got to be a kid again! “She loved every minute of it,” said her mom, Iveth.
With her mom, dad and big brother by her side, she met every princess she could at Magic Kingdom, talked to the dolphins and penguins at SeaWorld and danced with Dora at Universal. The magical moments she had allowed her to forget about the struggles she faced over the last 2.5 years and replace them with joy-filled memories! Maylin’s wish gave her confidence back!
