A child’s wish is not just a joyful experience, but a life-giving opportunity to restore hope to a critically ill child and their family in the process. Owen’s wish was nothing less than that for him and his family.
Owen was diagnosed with cancer in February 2018, which set his family on quite the journey having to take a special treatment that could only be done in New York. “Traveling from Atlanta to New York was tiring,” Owen’s mother Kate shared, “but it was what we had to do.” It was during this time that he began his next journey as a wish kid.
Owen could wish to have, wish to be, wish to give, or wish to go, and his choice led him to go and sail the high seas, Disney-style. Building up to the embarkation day, the energy around the trip was exciting for the whole family. Kate shared that the whole process, “was a really lovely way to get Owen’s mind off of everything going on around him.” They set sail from Port Canaveral, Florida, for a five-day cruise into the Caribbean exploring Nassau and Disney’s Castaway Cay. Exploring the islands was exciting for Owen, but he had just as much fun exploring the ship’s deck. He took most interest in the onboard activities such as treasure hunting, and mostly hung out at the pool taking advantage of its waterslide!
Together Owen, his parents, and his two siblings created memories onboard the Disney cruise line that they will treasure forever. “The best part about this trip was that we were able to spend time as a family, unplugged, without distractions and it was truly life-giving for us,” Kate shared. Owen’s wish to go granted more than just a fun time, but a happy one for him and his family and for that Kate emphatically shared that they “are truly thankful.”
