ANDREW'S NEW NORMAL
In 5th grade, Andrew’s life began to change. One red flag turned into appointments with specialists, and eventually months of chemo. It was important to his mom that Andrew knew that his diagnosis did not define him. Andrew was a fighter and an optimist. “Many times with a long weekend or vacation or holiday, that is when he would have to have treatment,” said Andrew’s mom. Because of this, his family rarely had the chance to travel anymore. Although everything seemed to be changing around him, one of the constants in his life throughout doctors’ visits and operations was an up-and-coming band he had discovered called Dance Gavin Dance.
THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME
When Andrew qualified for a wish he knew he wanted to travel, but he also dreamed of meeting the band that had accompanied him to treatments over the past 5 years. With a friend and his family by his side, Andrew made his way to San Antonio to meet the band that had given him hope while his world changed around him.
The concert was incredible, but the people were even better. The members of Dance Gavin Dance were so thrilled to meet Andrew and to hear his story.
“They spent 30 minutes just talking with him,” Andrew’s mom said, “They were just such great men.”
Andrew and his family spent the next day exploring local markets, underground cities, and the San Antonio River. From the scenic views to the emotional meet and greets, Andrew’s wish gave his whole family a renewed hope.
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT
This trip had such a positive impact on Andrew. His story is not what kids normally go through, so it was good for him to feel like a normal kid for a week,” Andrew’s mom said. Andrew graduated high school in the spring and will be going to college for a career in healthcare.
